What is a Pedorthist?

A Canadian Certified Pedorthist (C. Ped (C)) is trained in the assessment of lower limb anatomy and biomechanics.  These trained specialists work with the function, and modification of both custom and off the shelf products, including bracing and orthotics. 

Do I need a prescription?

Yes, we suggest our patients obtain a prescription before purchasing a product for the following reasons:

1. Extended Benefits: If you have extended benefits that you will be submitting to for re-imbursement, they will usually require a prescription that pre-dates the purchase. 
2. Tax Exempt: With a prescription, the equipment purchased becomes a "Medical Item", making it tax exempt.
3. Scope of practice: It is not in the scope of practice for a pedorthist to diagnose illness or injury. With a doctor's prescription we will be able to help you find the best product for your situation, providing you with the best medical treatment possible

Do I need an appointment? 

We suggest making an appointment whenever possible to ensure that one of our specialists will be able to help you. However, many 'off-the-shelf' or surgical equipment items would not require an appointment. For these, you are welcome to stop by Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:00pm.

What is the process of getting a brace?

When you book a brace assessment appointment, we will complete a few tests and take measurements of the leg. You will then try on a variety of brace until we are satisfied with the choice. If the brace is available in the correct size, you can take it home after this appointment. If not, we will order the correct brace in which usually takes 5-7 business days. We will then call you to schedule a 'fitting' appointment to be sure that the brace ordered fits correctly and comfortably.

What is the process of getting orthotics? 

Orthotics are a two appointment process. The first appointment is referred to as an assessment and is roughly 45 minutes. During this appointment we will execute range of motion test along with a biomechanical assessment. The appointment will finish with foam casts taken of the feet. We will then set up a 2 week follow up 'fitting' appointment. At this appointment, we will ask you to bring in the shoes you plan on wearing the orthotics in so we can be sure they fit the shoes, and your feet, comfortably.
